A healthy diet has long been considered essential to maintain and improve health and several studies have proven the beneficial effect of nutrition on health throughout life. A well-balanced diet is important to maintain health and to lower health risks for specific diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity.
Guidelines for management of these diseases tend to include nutritional recommendations, focusing on energy intake overall, as well as the intake of specific food groups and nutrients.
Apart from diet, other lifestyle factors play an important role in staying healthy. But it is not always clear what behaviors comprise a healthy lifestyle. What is even less clear is how lifestyle factors, such as activity, diet, sleep, stress, smoking, and sun exposure interact to influence health.
The knowledge on the effects of nutrition and other lifestyle factors on health is far from complete and more research is needed to improve understanding of the role of nutrition and lifestyle as key factors to improve the health of the population at all stages of life.
